Malibu, Calif. - Pepperdine University's head coach Gualberto Escudero was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region Women's Tennis Coach of the Year, the organization announced Monday. Escudero, who is in his 29th season with the Waves, becomes a finalist for the national award, which will be announced on May 22.
Escudero, who coached the team into the Top 10 for the first time since 2001, led the Waves to their fourth consecutive West Coast Conference title and a 20-3 regular season record. Appearing in its 19th straight NCAA Regional, Pepperdine defeated Wichita State, 4-0, in the first round, but was eliminated from play after the Waves fell to UCLA in the second round.
"Gualberto Escudero has a long tradition of success with the Pepperdine women's tennis program," said Pepperdine Athletic Director John Watson. "He nurtures his players with great care and encourages them in all aspects of their life. His recognition as the West Region Coach of the Year is well deserved."
Escudero will see his top two doubles teams--No. 17 Sylvia Kosakowski and Merve Asimgil and No. 31 Eva Dickes and Bianca Dulgheru--compete at the NCAA Doubles Championships. Dulgheru, who is currently ranked 22nd, will appear in her second NCAA Singles Championships. Competition will kick off on Tuesday, May 23 at the Taube Tennis Center at Stanford University.
