San Diego Women Fall to UCLA 4-0 in Second Round of NCAA Championships

May 16, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team had their season ended on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to the sixth-ranked UCLA Bruins in the second round of the NCAA Championships from the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Toreros (19-6) were unable to avenge their earlier loss to the Bruins (20-5) this season as UCLA now moves on to the round of 16 at Stanford University next weekend.

Doubles play was tight from the outset. Anna Depenau and Maja Sujica got out to an early lead at No. 3 over Maya Johansson and Pamela Montez before UCLA's tandem fought back to even it at 3-3 and eventually climbed ahead 6-3 before closing out the 8-3 win and giving UCLA the first victory of the match.

At No. 2, Laura Claus and Josymar Escalona fell down early to McCall Jones and Noelle Hickey, but battled back to tie it at 7-7 in the first set. From there UCLA was able to grab the lead for good by winning the next two game and clinching the doubles point for the Bruins.

USD's 88th-ranked duo of Juliette Coupez and Stephanie Hoffpauir exchanged games with No. 23 Andrea Remynse and Courtney Dolehide through the first ten games, but were unable to complete the match once UCLA clinched the doubles point.

In singles, the Toreros took early first-set leads in three of the six matches but weren't able to maintain them. At No. 2, Escalona opened up a 3-1 lead on No. 41 Hickey in the first set, but was unable to hold it as Hickey came back to take over the lead at 5-4 and eventually win the set 6-4. In the second set, Escalona was unable to build any momentum as Hickey took the set and the match 6-1, putting the Bruins up 2-0.

Hoffpauir, ranked 71st in singles, fell behind No. 57 Jones early in the first set and ended up dropping the set 6-1. In the second set, Jones opened up a 4-0 lead and never looked back, earning the 6-2 second-set victory.

At No. 6, Sujica went up 3-1 on Johansson before Johansson stormed back to take the next five games in a row and win the first set 6-3. Their second set was even at 2-2 until Johansson pulled ahead at 4-2 and finished it off with a 6-3 second-set victory that clinched the win for UCLA.

With the loss the Toreros' season comes to an end as USD matched their best NCAA finish in team history by advancing to the second round.
