SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The first round of singles at the 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships was completed earlier today. Pepperdine University's Omar Altmann, the WCC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, and University of San Diego's Dean Jackson both advanced to the round of the 32, to be played tomorrow.
Altmann defeated Florida State's Alex Lacroix (6-3, 6-4) in the only WCC straight set match of the day, while Jackson outlasted his opponent, Ohio State's Justin Kronauge, in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-4).
Pepperdine's Bassam Beidas lost in a crushing third set tiebreaker to Virginia's Dominic Inglot. After coming back to win the second set, Beidas fought hard but eventually fell in one of the closest matches he has played all season, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6).
University of San Francisco's Jenni Heinser, the WCC Women's Tennis Player of the Year, suffered the same luck, coming back from a 0-3 deficit against Florida State's Noemi Scharle in the second set to go to a third. Unfortunately, Heinser eventually lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Tomorrow, Altmann will face No. 60-ranked Ishay Hadash from Minnesota, and Jackson will take on No. 7 seed Michael Venus from Louisiana State. Both matches will go on at 10 AM.
Later that afternoon, Altmann will pair up with Beidas for the first round of doubles play against Tulsa's Arnau Brugues and Philip Stevens.
