URBANA, Ill --. The West Coast Conference was well represented in the NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Singles Championships with five players in action on Wednesday. The women began play in the morning with Pepperdine's Lorraine Guillermo, Santa Clara's Katie Le, and Saint Mary's Jenny Jullien taking the court. The afternoon men's session featured Pepperdine's Sebastian Fanselow and Alex Sarkissian.
The first WCC match of the day featured #32 Guillermo against #35 Kata Szekely of Tennessee. Szekely edged Guillermo 6-4 in the opening frame before taking set two 6-2. Although the sophomore made an early exit in her first singles championship appearance, Guillermo made a bit of history as the first Wave to earn a spot in the 64-person draw since the 2007 season.
Guillermo finishes the singles portion of her sophomore campaign with a 20-12 overall record, and has picked up numerous awards for her contributions this year. She was voted the 2013 ITA Southwest Regional Player to Watch and also was an All-West Coast Conference first team performer in both singles and doubles.
The championships aren't over for Guillermo, however. She'll team up with Khunpak Issara for the NCAA Doubles Championship today. Ranked #17 as a pair, the duo will take on Virginia's Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi.
Meanwhile, Santa Clara junior Katie Le defeated No. 30 Emina Bektas of No. 10 Michigan 7-6(3), 7-5, winning the school's first-ever individual match at the NCAA Singles Championship. "I am focused on my next match already, but I am so relieved to have won," said Le. "Last year I lost in the first round and this year I really wanted to win a round to start. I proved I do belong here and this win helps my confidence. I am really excited to play the No. 3 seed in the next round."
Le battled hard in today's match, but fell in the second round to the No. 3 seed Robin Anderson of No. 7 UCLA, 7-6(1), 6-2. "Getting my first NCAA win was a great feeling," said Le. "After looking at the draw later that day and seeing many of the top seeds had lost, I knew every player here was good but beatable also. I knew I needed to play well to beat Anderson." Le ends the season with a 22-13 overall singles record and her most successful NCAA finish yet.
The final WCC women's match of the day saw #23 Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's face off against #16 Yana Koroleva of Clemson. After splitting the first two sets, Jullien's rally in the third came up just short as the West Coast Conference Player of the Year fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Wednesday's match brings an end to a historic season for Jullien. She joined Alex Poorta as the only Saint Mary's players ever to win WCC Player of the Year and compete in the NCAA Singles Tournament. She also climbed as high as No. 17 in the ITA rankings, a program best, and helped the Gaels claim a share of the WCC regular season team title.
The Pepperdine men's tennis team went a perfect 2-for-2 on the opening day of the NCAA Singles Championship. Both Sebastian Fanselow and Alex Sarkissian battled to win in three sets and advance to the second round.
Fanselow, a 9-16 seed in the 64-person bracket, opened the singles tournament against Anis Ghorbel of Drake. Although Ghorbel, ranked #65, got on the board first with a 6-3 win in the opening frame, 11th-ranked Fanselow fought back in the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Now 29-8 on the season, Fanselow will face Oklahoma's Guillermo Alcorta in second round action. Alcorta is ranked #58 and holds down the No. 2 spot in the Sooners' lineup. The two have yet to face one another in collegiate competition.
The Waves' second representative, #62 Sarkissian played the role of spoiler and defeated #34 Hunter Reese of Tennessee 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Sarkissian will face #10 Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt in the second round.
