Stanford, Calif. - San Diego senior Emma Murphy and Pepperdine sophomore Bianca Dulgheru, the WCC's two representatives at the NCAA Singles Championship, each made first round exits on the tournament's first day in Stanford, CA on Wednesday. Murphy fell to Clemson University's Federica van Adrichem, 6-3, 6-2, while Dulgheru was defeated in three sets by second-seed Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
The trip marked Murphy's third straight appearance in the postseason tournament. A two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year, she finished the regular season as the WCC co-Player of the Month for April and was named to the All-WCC First Team for her fourth consecutive year. She rode a 14-game win streak through the end of the regular season and into the 2006 WCC Championships where she led the Toreros to a third place finish.
Dulgheru will team up with junior Eva Dickes and will face Miller and Lindsay Shosho of Georgia Tech in the NCAA Doubles Championships on Thursday, while fellow Waves Merve Asimgil and junior Sylvia Kosakowski face Neyssa Etienne and Gabriela Duch of South Florida. The Wave duo upset then-No. 12 Etienne and Duch, 9-7, earlier in the season.
