Los Angeles - After finishing in the West Coast Conference's top two for the third time in six years, Loyola Marymount women's tennis continued to improve in the national rankings.
LMU defeated then-56th-ranked San Diego to advance to the WCC Championship Match. With the victory over the ranked opponent, the Lions' third of the season, LMU finished 65th in the final national team rankings.
"The team played its best tennis all the way down the lineup those last three days of the season at the WCC Championships," LMU Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said.
Individually, sophomore Pavla Mesterova defended her singles ranking with impressive performances against other ranked competition at the WCC Championships. She completes her 2005-06 campaign ranked 72nd nationally in singles.
The Lions also have a ranked doubles duo, as Mesterova and partner Robyn Baker are ranked 52nd in the final national standings.
In the final West Region rankings, LMU finished 11th as a team. Mesterova ranked 18th in singles and finished 11th in the doubles rankings with Baker.
