Los Angeles, CA (Sept. 12) -- The Loyola Marymount University women's tennis team will start the 2006-07 season in record fashion, as they earned ranking in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Ranking administered by ITA for both singles and doubles, a first in the 30 year history of the program.
Junior Pavla Mesterova has been ranked 51st as a singles player by the ITA, the highest preseason ranking in school history. Adding to that, the Mesterova and doubles partner Robyn Baker have been ranked 29th. It is the first time the Lions have had preseason rankings in both categories.
Mesterova had a breakout first season for the Lions after transfering from Texas-Arlington. She led the Lions with a record of 25-10. A first-team All-WCC selection, her 25 wins ranked ninth all-time in LMU history for a single season.
She went on to earn LMU Newcomer of the Year honors and LMU Co-Female Athlete of the Year honors.
In partnering with Baker, the pair posted a record of 7-10 but played against some of the nation's best. Among the seven wins last season the duo defeated the then sixth-ranked doubles team in the nation, Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter of Fresno State.
Their performace last season earned them first-team All-WCC honors.
The LMU Women's Tennis program will celebrate its 30th anniversary during Alumni Weekend, Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Special events will be scheduled. For more information, contact Coach Jamie Sanchez.
