CHENEY, Wash. - The University of Portland women's tennis team continued play Saturday at the Red Lion Invitational hosted by Eastern Washington University as sophomores Anna Gullickson and Jenna Tanzer advanced to the semifinals of the individual tournament.
In the quarterfinals, Gullickson (pictured) dominated Rachel Berger of Eastern Washington, winning every game en route to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Tanzer was beating second-seeded Kasey Knox of Eastern Washington 6-2, 2-0 before Knox retired in the second set due to injury. The tournament semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday.
Five Pilots played In the Round of 16 earlier in the day, with Gullickson upending fourth-seeded Mariel Tinnirello of Idaho 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Tanzer besting seventh-seeded Mari Castello of Montana 6-2, 6-4. In the other matches, UP's Lindsey Griffin, the fifth seed, fell to Berger 6-4, 6-2, junior Christie Feyen, the eight seed, lost to Kerstyn Dolack of Eastern Washington 6-3, 6-4, and freshman Audree Jenks battled the second-seeded Knox before falling 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
In doubles action, Gullickson and Tanzer teamed up to defeat Courtney Childers and Alyson Peck of Lewis-Clark State College 8-0, while Jenks and Griffith, seeded third, fell to Amanda Mankovits and Illiana Petrova of Eastern Washington 8-5. Gullickson and Tanzer advanced to the quarterfinals, where they lost to Patricia Ruman and Tinnirello of Idaho 8-6.
