Loyola Marymount women's tennis senior, Pavla Mesterova, has been selected to play in the singles qualifying tournament for the 2007 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships taking place on October 2-3. This is the first ITA national singles and doubles championships of the 2007-2008 season.
Mesterova, who is ranked at No. 40 as a singles player by the ITA, will be participating in the qualifying tournament, the premier event of the fall season featuring the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. The ranking is the highest by any player in women's tennis history.
The October 4-7 main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player, 32 doubles team prequalifying tournament is September 29-30 at UCLA, and eight players and four doubles teams will advance from there to the qualifying tournament at Riviera. Eight players and four doubles teams will then advance to the main draw.
Mesterova finished the season with a 27-6 record, going 19-3 in dual matches at No. 1 singles. The 27 wins ranks fifth all-time in LMU history for victories in a single season while her .818 winning percentage is the best in program history.
In two seasons at LMU, Mesterova has a career record of 52-16. She needs 11 more wins to crack the top-10 for career victories and her career winning percentage of .764 is tops in program history.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila dates back to 1983 when Georgia's Lisa Spain won the inaugural title. In 1999 the University of San Diego's Zuzana Lesenarova made history at the Riviera when she won her record fifth national collegiate singles title. In 2003 Cal's Raquel Kops-Jones became the first African American woman to win a national collegiate singles title at the NCAA Division I level. The Riviera Tennis Club has played host to this event since 1988.
