The USD women's tennis team, under the direction of head coach Sherri Stephens, kicks off the 2006-07 season on Friday, Sept. 29, when they participate in the annual SDSU Fall Classic at the Aztec Tennis Center. USD will join host San Diego State and five other teams in the weekend event. All seven teams participating finished the 2005-06 season ranked in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
Teams making the trip to Montezuma Mesa are Pepperdine and Arizona, both of which advanced to the second round of the 2006 NCAA tournament and finished the year ranked 14th and 34th in the nation, respectively. Rounding out this year's participants are Alabama (No. 39), San Diego (No. 55), Denver (No. 58), and Florida State (No. 72). The host SDSU Aztecs finished ranked No. 38 in the nation.
The three-day tournament will feature individual competition and no team scoring with three flights of singles matches and two flights of doubles. The action gets underway at 9 a.m. on Friday with doubles play, followed by singles matches at approximately 10 a.m.
USD participants will include junior Helene Lindstrand in Flight 1 singles; sophomore Zoe Taylor and freshman Alexandra Demidova in Flight 2 singles; and sophomore Sophia Vogt and freshman Justine Perl in Flight 3 singles. Perl and Taylor are scheduled to participate in doubles action. Last season the Toreros finished 11-7 overall.
