(San Diego, CA) - The USD women's tennis team started their fall campaign by competing in the SDSU Fall Tennis Classic. Senior Helene Lindstrand turned in a strong showing as she reached the Flight 1 Singles semifinals before falling to SDSU's Holly Bragshaw, 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday. Lindstrand opened the tourney with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Camelia Todorova of Arizona, and a 6-4, 7-5 win over SDSU's Julia Trunk. Also playing in the Flight 1 singles bracket was Milou Teeling who dropped an opening round 6-0, 6-2 decision to Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava.
In the Flight 2 Singles bracket, USD's Ellie Faulkner won her first round match against SDSU's Darby McGill (6-0, 6-3), but was bounced in the second round by Shiva Shankar of Rice, 6-0, 7-6 (3). Faulkner also lost her Compass Draw match to Jane Huh of Arizona, 6-3, 6-0. For USD, Justine Perl was also playing in the Flight 2 singles bracket. She lost her opening match to Tiffany Lee of Rice, 6-0, 6-3. In the back draw she bested Pepperdine's Raine Mitchell (6-1, 0-1 retired), and was scheduled to face Kaja Smole in the consolation championship.
In doubles play, the Torero duo of Lindstrand-Teeling lost their opening round match, as did Perl-Faulkner. Both teams were still competing in the consolation contests.
