Malibu, Calif. - Pepperdine's newcomers are already proving their talent as all three moved to the third round of singles action at the Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiate Tournament. Tania Rice, who is seeded second in the tournament and fourth-seeded Jill Braverman along with Anete Bandere had a successful opening day as they compete in their first fall tournament.
After receiving a first-round bye, Rice defeated Canna Furuta of Cal State Northridge 7-5, 6-1 and will face Diane Filip of Cal Poly. Braverman, who also had a first-round bye, easily put away UC Irvine's Ali Borowicz 6-3, 6-2. The Newport Beach native will face Steffi Wong of Cal Poly. Bandere defeated Denise Liebschner of Cal State Long Beach 6-2, 6-2 and finished up the day with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Brandy Andrews of Cal State Fullerton. Along with her teammates, Bandere will kick off third-round action tomorrow at 9 a.m. when she faces third-seeded Silvia Gutierrez of Cal State Northridge.
Senior Caroline Raba retired to Cal Poly's Maria Malec in the second round.
After a first-round bye, Pepperdine's tandem of Rice and Bandere, who are seeded first in doubles, will face Liege Vieira and Lisa Shih of UC Irvine tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. The quarterfinal match will follow at 3:30 p.m.
