MORAGA, Calif. - Kristen MacWilliam and Carrie Schofield, of the Gonzaga University women's tennis team, combined to advance to the quarterfinals of Doubles Red Flight at the Saint Mary's Classic Saturday in Moraga, Calif.
Schools participating in the tournament include Saint Mary's College, Gonzaga, Stanford University, University of California, Fresno State University, Loyola Marymount University, University of Portland, University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University, University of the Pacific, San Jose State University, UC Davis, Sonoma State University, Sacramento State University and the University of Nevada.
MacWilliam and Schofield advanced to the quarterfinals, thanks to pair of wins in the first two rounds. In the first round, the Zags pressured through a 9-7 victory over Nezhura and Arens of Pacific. They then advanced to the round of 16, where they posted an 8-4 win over Carollo and Bulich of Sonoma State. Also competing in the doubles red flight was Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer, who earned a bye in the opening round but fell in the round of 16. In the blue flight, Aglaya Kokurina and Emily Anderson dropped their match in the first round.
In the red flight of singles play, Mehndiratta posted a 6-3, 3-0 (ret. Inj.) victory over Dixit of USF before falling to Santa Clara's Pane (6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (7)). Anderson, Kokurina, MacWilliam, Schofield and Farmer also participated in singles play, dropping their respective matches. All six Bulldogs will open consolation play Sunday.
