(San Diego, CA) - USD's Samantha Mouly (Paris, France) turned in the biggest upset of the day at the Wilson/ITA West Region Championships, being held at The Barnes Center, when she defeated No. 1 seed Sarah Fansler of USC, 6-4, 7-5. Fansler has a current preseason ITA/Fila ranking of 10th in the nation. Mouly advanced to Saturday's quarter finals with her afternoon win over Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru, 6-1, 6-2. Mouly will next face SDSU's Julia Trunk on Saturday. USD's Monica Wiesener, seeded in the top 16, was beaten by Trunk, 7-5, 6-2. Helene Lindstrand also lost her singles match today, losing a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (4) decision to UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin.
In doubles action, Mouly and Lindstrand won their first match, defeating Cal State Fullerton's tandem of Injejikian-Inglis, 8-5. They were knocked out in their second match, 8-4 by UNLV's team of Gantcheva-Nedeltcheva. USD's other two doubles teams lost their first match. Faulkner-Teeling lost 8-3 to UCSB's Damion-Onaga; and Wiesener-Perl lost 8-3 to Pepperdine's Dulgheru-Kosakowski.
