Women's Tennis Completes Day One at ITA Regionals

Malibu, Calif. - Members of the Pepperdine women's tennis team opened play at the Wilson/ITA West Regional Women's Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. The Waves saw its two top-seeded singles players advance to the third round.

After receiving first-round byes, juniors Bianca Dulgheru and Sylvia Kosakowski posted second-round victories to advance to the third round of singles. Second-seed Dulgheru didn't give up a point as she defeated Erynne Oki of UC Riverside 6-0, 6-0 and will face Judy DeVera of USC. Kosakowski defeated LMU's Robyn Baker 6-3, 6-4 to face Monica Weisner of San Diego. Both matches are slated for 10 a.m.

In doubles, the Wave duo pair up for a No. 2 seed and will face Justine Perl and Alexandra Demidova in a second-round match at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Freshman Tania Rice defeated Sydni Katz of Arizona 6-2, 6-1 in the first round, but fell to No. 1 seed Amanda Fink of USC, 6-1, 6-1. After a first-round bye, freshman teammate Anete Bandere was defeated by No. 13 seed Yasmin Schnack of UCLA 6-2, 6-1.

In other first round action, sophomore Alicia Poladian fell to San Diego State's Holly Bagshaw, 6-0, 6-0, while senior Caroline Raba fell in the third set to San Diego's Helene Lindstrand 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Singles will resume at 9 a.m. tomorrow with doubles set to begin at 10 a.m.
