Malibu, Calif. - As the third day of competition came to a close at the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships in San Diego, Calif., junior Bianca Dulgheru advanced to the semifinals of singles. The No. 2 seed Dulgheru handed sixth-seeded Tracey Lin of UCLA a 6-0, 6-4 defeat and will face No. 12 seed Sarah Fansler of USC at noon on Sunday.
The second-seed Wave duo of Dulgheru and Kosakowski posted an 8-6 victory over UCLA's Anna-Viktoria Lind and Stefanie Wetmore, but were upset in the quarterfinals by eighth-seeded Sarah Fansler and Dianne Matias 8-3.
On Friday, the singles consolation draw kicked off with freshmen Anete Bandere and Tania Rice, sophomore Alicia Poladian and senior Caroline Raba. In the first round, Bandere posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over LMU's Vanessa Lunardi followed by a 7-6, 6-2 win over Kathryn Kitts of San Diego State. Raba also posted two wins on Friday--a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over UCSB's Tova Hausman and a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sonya Kumar of Cal State Northridge. Both Poladian and Rice fell in the first round of consolations; Poladian was defeated by Long Beach State's Nina Burgoon 6-1, 6-3, while Rice fell to Cal State Northridge's Silvia Gutierrez 6-2, 6-1.
In today's consolation play, Bandere defeated UCSB's Carina Bjornstorm 6-3, 7-5, but fell to Hawaii's Sabita Walkup 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Raba was defeated by UCLA's Lind 7-6, 6-2.
