San Diego, CA - The Loyola Marymount women's tennis team had a busy weekend as they played at the Wilson/ITA Western Region Women's Regional Championships hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State. Pavla Mesterova had the most success for the Lions as she advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals for the first time.
A number eight seed in the singles draw going into tournament play, Mesterova lived up to her seeding throughout each match. After having a bye in round one, Mesterova defeated Holy Bragshaw of San Diego State (6-2, 6-0). She then went on to beat Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava in the round of 32 (7-5, 0-6, 6-3) and Elizabeth Lumpkin of UCLA in a close match (7-6, 7-6) to move to the quarterfinals. Out of the 128 entries in the ITA Regionals, Mesterova was left as one out of eight players. Facing the number four seed in the tournament, Nadia Abdala of Arizona State, Mesterova started out strong winning the first set 6-3 but could not sustain the fine play and eventually lost the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. Due to her success in reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament, Mesterova will be in the running for an at large consideration for the 2007 ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held from November 1-4 in Ohio.
In other singles play, Tamara Tanner lost in the first round against Nikol Dimitrova of UNLV, 6-4, 6-4.
