Spokane, Wash. - Gonzaga University head women's tennis coach D.J. Gurule has announced the signing of Rika Mehndiratta to a National Letter of Intent.
"Rika will be a wonderful addition to our team," commented Gurule. "She not only is an outstanding athlete, but also a stellar student. Rika will be able to join our team and make a direct impact. She has a great all around game, and will contribute in both singles and doubles play. We are very excited to add one of the strongest players in the Pacific Northwest to our 2008 roster."
Mehndiratta, a native of Portland, Ore., will join the Bulldogs as a freshman in the fall of 2007. She is currently ranked as high as No. 239 in the USTA national rankings and second in the Pacific Northwest Region. She previously had been ranked as high as No. 150 in the country and has received a four star ranking from tennisrecruiting.net.
The Jesuit High School senior earned a second place finish in the 2006 4A Oregon State High School Tennis Championships as a junior. She is also the Pacific Northwest recipient of the Scott Eden Sportsmanship Award, which is awarded annually by the UTSA.
The Zags will open the 2006-07 spring season on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 when they travel to Pullman, Wash. to face Washington State University.
