Three Gaels Post Top Rankings in Northwest Region

Skillman, NJ - The latest fall regional rankings for the ITA Tennis Association came out December 7. Saint Mary's women's tennis players Jessica Hoath, Stef Ordoveza, and Alexandra Poorta were each recognized as a Top-30 player in the Northwest Region. Senior Jessica Hoath earned the highest ranking in Saint Mary's tennis history, placing 13th on the Top-30 list. Stef Ordoveza earned the 22nd spot on the list, while freshman Alexandra Poorta finished 28th.

Jessica Hoath competed against many top players this fall, earning her top spot in the ITA fall rankings. At the Saint Mary's Invitational this fall, Hoath defeated a handful of top players, including her toughest opponent, the No. 1-seeded Lindsey Burdette of Stanford. Hoath defeated Burdette in the tournament semi-final, marking the biggest win of her career thus far.

Hoath returns to Saint Mary's after a stellar spring season in 2007. The Australian native was named to the All-West Coast Conference Second Team for singles for the second straight year, and was named to the All-WCC First Team in doubles for the third straight year. Hoath ended the season with a singles record of 11-5 while playing at the No. 2 spot all year, andteamed-up with Aude Lambert at the No. 1 doubles spot, posting an 8-6 record.

Stef Ordoveza returns to the Gaels after compiling a solid resume throughout the spring and fall of 2007. Most recently the senior faced tough competition throughout the fall, winning four straight matches at the Saint Mary's Invitational. Ordoveza recorded wins over Portland's Stefanie Doolittle, UC Davis' Emma Shapiro, Santa Clara's Ashley Payne, and Pacific's Olga Gumenyuk.

In the spring of 2007, Ordoveza had a singles record of 9-3, playing at the No. 6 spot the majority of the season. The Daly City native teamed up with Femke Strijbis and Marah Calvo throughout the 2007 spring to acquire an 8-1 doubles record at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

Alex Poorta had a strong fall season for the Gaels as a freshman. Poorta joins the Gaels from the Netherlands, and has made an immediate impact on the team thus far. Poorta advanced to the finals of the Flight 2 Singles of the San Diego State Tennis Classic, defeating Ali Borowicz of UC Irvine 6-1, 7-5 in the finals of the championship.

Head Coach Lisa Alipaz stated, "Alex gained some crucial experience this fall, her finish should give her some good momentum going into spring play."

The ITA Regional Rankings include eight different regions, including East, Southeast, South, Midwest, Southwest, Central, Northwest, and West. Rankings only come out twice during fall competition (September 7 and December 7), once spring competition begins rankings will be released each week, starting January 29.

The Gaels' first competition of the 2008 season will take place on Sunday, February 3 as they travel to Stockton, Ca where they face the University of Pacific at 1:00 PM.
