SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 20th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team rolled in its 2006 season opener claiming a 3-0 (30-27, 30-21,30-26) win over Hofstra University in the opening game of the San Diego State University Tournament at Peterson Gym on the campus of SDSU.
Senior Christie Dawson led all players with a match-high 18 kills and both Laurel Abrahamson and Jessica Anderson chipped in six kills apiece to help lead the Toreros (1-0) to a three-game sweep over the Pride. Senior Laura Murphy dished out a match-high 32 assists, while Kayleen Webster made her Torero debut with a math-best 10 digs. As a team the Toreros finished the match with 44 kills and a .178 attack percentage.
Hofstra (0-1) as a team finished with 32 kills and an attack percentage of .167. The Pride was led by Beverly Rivera who recorded a team-best 13 kills.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. as they take on the Matadors of Cal State Northridge at the SDSU Tournament. USD will then play a second match on Saturday evening against cross-town rival and host San Diego State in a 7 p.m. match at Peterson Gym.
