SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team bounced back from two tough losses to Pacific-10 Conference teams to defeat Morgan State University 3-0 (30-23, 30-23, 30-19) in its second match of the Gonzaga Volleyball Tournament Saturday at the Martin Centre. The Bulldogs improved to 3-3 on the season with the victory, while the Bears, members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, fell to 0-2. It's the first time since the 2000 season that the Zags started the season with three victories that were sweeps.
All 15 Gonzaga players saw action and contributed to the victory over Morgan State. Senior Becky Jones led the way for the Bulldogs with match-highs of 12 kills and 11 digs; also her second double-double of the season. Classmate Briawna Mueller followed with eight kills and a stellar .412 hitting clip, along with a match-high six blocks; five of which were solo blocks. Senior Heather Dunn passed out 41 assists as the Zags finished with 47 team blocks and a .204 attacking percentage.
The Bulldogs closed out the match with the 48-37 advantage in digs, the 11-3 edge in blocks and the 6-0 lead in service aces.
Jeniqua Moran led the way for the Bears finishing the contest with 11 kills, six digs, and two assists. Also having a strong match for Morgan State was Esther Johnson. Johnson contributed nine kills and nine digs, along with two assists. Jentri Fullove passed out 26 assists as MSU finished the match with 32 total kills and a .075 attacking percentage.
The Bulldogs will close out the Gonzaga Volleyball Tournament with a match against Boise State University at 7 p.m. tonight. The Broncos are 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the tournament, having defeated Morgan State (3-0) and lost to the University of Washington (3-0).
In the first match on the second day of the Gonzaga University Volleyball Tournament, the University of Washington continued to roll with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-17, 30-19) victory over Boise State University. With the win the Huskies improved to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in the tournament, while the Broncos fell 3-2 on the year and 1-1 in the tournament.
Leading the way for Washington was Stevie Mussie who finished with a match-high 18 kills, along with a .424 hitting clip, six digs and two block assists. Becky Perry added 11 kills while Christal Morrison chipped in 10. Jessica Swarbrick dominated above the net for UW with eight blocks. Jenna Hagglund dished out a match-high 41 assists as Washington finished with 48 total team kills and a .413 hitting percentage.
Boise State was led by Arlee Tamietti who had nine kills, two digs and two block assists. Mandy Klein passed out 25 assists as the Broncos had 31 total team kills and a .037 attacking percentage.
