SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team won its third-straight match Monday with a 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-26) sweep over visiting University of Montana. With the win the Bulldogs improved to 5-3 on the season, while the Grizzlies, who Gonzaga defeated by the same score on Aug. 25, fell to 3-4. It is the first time in program history that the Zags have swept their first five matches and the first time since the 1997 campaign they have had five total sweeping victories.
Becky Jones continued to roll for Gonzaga finishing with her third-straight double-double. The senior finished with 11 kills and 11 digs, along with one assist and one block assist. Sophomore Michelle Boevers was also a key factor in the victory adding a match-high 12 kills, in addition to six digs, three total blocks and two service aces.
Senior Heather Dunn passed out 39 assists as the Bulldogs tallied 49 team kills and a .271 attacking percentage. Dunn, who finished with her team-leading fifth double-double, also added 10 digs, two kills and two block assists.
The Bulldogs held the advantage in digs, team blocks and aces for third-straight contest. Gonzaga finished the contest with the 48-32 advantage in digs, the 11-7 edge in blocks an impressive 9-5 lead in aces over the Grizzlies.
Gonzaga only allowed two Montana players to finish with five or more kills, including Jade Roskam who closed out the match with 11. Roskam also had four digs, two block assists and one service ace. Amy Roberts was the other lone Griz to have five or more kills, finishing with seven.
Setter Taryn Wright dished out 24 assists as UM finished with 35 team kills and a .116 hitting percentage.
Gonzaga will be back in action Sept. 7-8 when its partakes in the University of New Mexico Tournament. The Bulldogs will face Bowling Green State University (9:45 a.m.) and Northern Colorado (4:15 p.m.) on Friday Sept. 7 and New Mexico (2:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 8.
