Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount volleyball handed Cal State Fullerton its first loss of 2006 Tuesday night in Gersten Pavilion. The Lions swept the Titans 3-0 (34-32, 31-29, 30-22) to win their third straight match and improve to 5-2. Cal State Fullerton fell to 5-1 on the season.
The first two games were back-and-forth battles that traded leads a combined 35 times. Hughes had six of her 14 kills in the first game alone, while it was Day's kill that closed the second game win for the Lions. Both games were so close that extra points were needed for the Lions to get the needed two point advantage.
The Titans jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the third frame, forcing LMU Head Coach Steve Stratos to take a quick timeout. The Lions then battled back to tie things at seven before pulling away with a 16-11 advantage, thanks in part to one of Day's two service aces. The Titans called a timeout trailing 23-20, but the Lions came out winning five straight points that featured a kill by Christianna Reneau and a block by Walsh and Megan Nash. Day's 15th kill of the night secured the sweep with the 30-22 game three win.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Brittany Moore, who posted 13 kills while hitting .500. She added three blocks.
Led by Day's 18 digs, LMU out-dug Cal State Fullerton 64-43.
The win was the third straight for the Lions, improving their home record to 3-1 in Gersten Pavilion.
