LOS ANGELES - Despite a season-best performance from senior middle blocker Lecca Roberts, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team dropped a three-game match to the #4 USC Trojans, 30-22, 30-23, 30-28 Wednesday night at USC's Galen Center.
The Waves dropped game one after managing only a .075 hitting percentage. In game two, the Waves took a 12-11 lead after falling behind 3-0 to start the game, but the Women of Troy scored 10 of the next 11 points to build a 21-13 and held on for a 30-23 victory. In a tightly contested game three, the Waves rallied to tie the match at 28-28 after trailing by as many as four points throughout the game, but the Women of Troy scored the final two points to seal the 30-28 victory.
"Sometimes we did some fabulous things, then we would turn around and do the exact opposite," Pepperdine Coach Nina Matthies said. "We didn't take care of the ball. We didn't help ourselves. We can't give away anything when we're playing a team like this. That's a good team playing at home."
Roberts (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury HS) led the Waves attack, as she recorded 12 kills and hit a season-high .750 on 16 swings. Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Lumsden (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) tallied her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs, while junior outside hitter Julie Rubenstein (Camarillo, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) notched eight kills, 11 digs and three block assists.
The Waves travel to Austin, Texas to face Cal State Bakersfield and #7 Texas on Friday, Sept. 7 in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. The match against Cal State Bakersfield is set for 10 a.m. PT, while the match against Texas begins at 4:30 p.m. PT. The Texas match will be televised live by ESPNU.
