(Sacramento) - USF opened the 2006 Sacramento State Hornet Invitational with a convincing sweep of Syracuse, 30-21, 30-26, 30-25 in the first match Friday morning at the Hornet's Nest. The Dons (5-1) hit .310 for the match as six players recorded at least four kills against the Orange (3-7).
Junior outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg led the way offensively with a match-high 16 kills on .464 hitting, while junior outside hitter Brynn Muarer recorded her second straight double-double performance with 10 kills on .444 hitting and 13 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Alix Gombos aadded eight kills for the Dons.
Senior setter Jamie Kartchner and sophomore setter Darcy Carroll each dished out 22 assists in the match. Freshman libero Haley Carroll added 13 blocks. USF held a tremendous 54-35 advantage in kills and won the digs battle 46-37. The Dons defense limited the Orange to a .148 attack percentage, including a .097 in game one.
USF returns to action in the tournament against host Sacramento State at 3:00 PM.
