(Sacramento) - USF volleyball captured its fifth straight win, sweeping UC Riverside 30-20, 30-28, 30-28 in second round action at the 2006 Sacramento State Hornet Invitational. The Dons (7-1) take on Western Kentucky in the tournament finale in a match scheduled for 5:00 PM.
Junior outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg recorded a match-high 14 kills on .360 hitting, including nine in game one. With her sixth kill against UC Riverside, Hasselberg moved into 10th place on the Dons all-time kills list passing Amanda Willnerd (1998-2001), who tallied 857. Next up on the list is Sharon Mellen (1984-87), who is in ninth place with 876.
Junior outside hitter Brynn Maurer added 13 kills and an ace for the Dons. Senior setter Jamie Kartchner dished out 40 assists for USF who hit at a .214 clip. Freshman libero Haley Carroll continued her strong play with a match-high 20 digs to go along with four service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Alix Gombos recorded eight kills on .500 hitting without an error.
San Francisco jumped out to a 8-1 lead and never looked back, hitting at a .405 clip in game one. Hasselberg punished the Highlanders with nine kills in the opening set, while Maurer added five.
USF was out of sync in game two and needed a late rally to take a 2-0 advantage. The Dons trailed 24-21, but went on a 9-4 run to end it. Maurer recorded a pair of kills and Carroll added a pair of aces, while serving four straight points.
Game three featured 21 tie scores and nine lead changes. The Dons trailed 27-26 before a pair of kills from Gombos, one from Kartchner and a Maurer service ace secured the game and match victory.
USF plays its final match in the 2006 Sacramento State Hornet Invitational when it takes on Western Kentucky. First serve against the Toppers is set for 5:00 PM.
