Miami, Flor. - Loyola Marymount volleyball won its seventh straight match with a 3-1 (30-19, 30-21, 30-20, 30-23) win over Jacksonville University Friday in day one action at the Miami Hurricane Invitational. With the win, the Lions improve to 9-2 on the season, while Jacksonville falls to 4-6.
The Lions also extended their game winning streak to 11 consecutive games before dropping game three to Jacksonville Friday night. The game streak had started last weekend at the LMU Four Points Sheraton-LAX Classic against UC Irvine and continued throughout the tournament against SMU and Nevada.
Reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Week Heather Hughes stepped up for the Lions all-around, finishing with 18 kills, seven blocks, seven digs, and five service aces. She hit .314 on her 35 swings. Her seven blocks equaled her career-high.
The Lions also got a boost from Lindsay Banas, who came in at middle blocker and recorded a career-high four block assists and two kills.
LMU served tough again Friday, tallying 12 aces, led by Hughes' five.
The Lions took the first two games before falling in the third frame, which saw LMU hit just -.056 as a team. LMU closed out the match in game fourth for the 3-1 win.
LMU continues play at the 2006 Miami Hurricane Invitational Saturday, first facing Florida A&M in the 7:00 a.m. PST match. The Lions will then battle the host Hurricanes Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PST.
