BOISE, Idaho - Gonzaga University, who was coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over Eastern Washington, was knocked off by the University of Oregon in three games Friday evening at the Boise State Tournament in Boise, Idaho. Gonzaga, who fell to Oregon 30-17, 30-26, 30-22, dropped to 4-8 on the season, while the Ducks are a perfect 9-0 on the year.
Oregon was able to control two of Gonzaga's top hitters in the match as it held Becky Jones and Elaina Renius to 16 kills on 43 attacks. Jones, the top Bulldog hitter entering the match, was limited to just nine kills and a .036 attacking clip. Renius, who was coming off a 17-kill performance against Eastern Washington, only had seven kills with a .200 hitting mark. Gonzaga was held to 32 total team kills and a .056 attacking percentage.
On the Ducks side of the net, Oregon was very effective as Sonja Newcombe recorded a match-high 17 kills on 29 attacks for a .414 attack percentage. Erin Little added nine kills and a .350 hitting clip, while Neticia Enesi chipped in seven kills and a .211 attacking percentage. Little, Lindsey Stone and Heather Madison combined for 38 assists as Oregon finished with 51 total kills and an impressive .312 hitting percentage.
The Ducks held a slight edge in blocking, with 10 total blocks compared to nine for the Bulldogs. Renius finished with a team-high four block assists for GU, while Karen Washington had one solo block and eight block assists for Oregon.
Gonzaga will close out the Boise State Tournament with a match against host Boise State University tomorrow. Match time is slated for 11:30 a.m.
