(Milwaukee) - USF captured its third straight tournament title with a 30-17, 30-20, 30-25 sweep of Manitoba in final round action of the 2006 Marquette Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center. The Dons (12-1) posted their 10th straight victory - the longest winning streak since the 2003 squad opened the season on a program record 15-match string.
Senior setter Jamie Kartchner earned tournament MVP honors for the first time as a Don after leading San Francisco to the highest attack percentage (.500) in school history in a sweep against Stony Brook in the first match on Saturday and then dished out a season-high 44 assists against Manitoba.
Freshman libero Haley Carroll enjoyed another outstanding tournament for USF, tallying 30 digs against the Bisons and averaged more than six per game for the weekend and collected all-tournament selection for the first time. Junior outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg received her fourth straight all-tournament nod after leading the Dons in kills for the fourth consecutive week.
Sophomore middle blocker Carly Babin led the Dons offensively with a team-high 11 kills on n.348 hitting and added a pair of blocks against Manitoba, while sophomore outside hitter Susan Bednarova turned in her best performance of the season with 10 kills on .381 hitting to go along with five digs.
San Francisco returns to action when it travels to the east coast. The Dons take on New Jersey IT Thursday before competing in the Long Island Blackbird Invitational beginning Friday in Brooklyn.
