No. 11 Wisconsin Defeats USD, 3-1

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 11th-ranked Badgers of the University of Wisconsin defeated the University of San Diego women's volleyball team in the final match of the USD Invitational Saturday evening to claim the tournament championship at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the 30-21, 21-30, 23-30, 26-30 loss, the Toreros fall to 10-4 on the season and saw their four-match winning streak come to an end. With the win, the Badgers improve to 8-2 on the season.

Offensively for the Toreros, Kristen Carlson led the team with 16 kills, Christie Dawson had 15 kills and Laurel Abrahamson was the third Torero with double-digit kills recording 10 kills on the evening. Jessica Nyrop had another solid performance as she registered 50 assists and Kayleen Webster had a team-high 18 digs.

For the Badgers, Maria Carlini had a match-best 19 kills, Brittany Dolgner had 15 kills and Audra Jeffers had 13 kills to lead the Wisconsin offense. Setter Jackie Simpson had a match-best 54 assists on the evening.

Both Dawson and Carlson were named to the All-Tournament team after turning in dominating performances this weekend. Carlson had a team-leading 58 kills (5.27 kills per game), five solo blocks and three service aces. Dawson had 57 kills (4.07 kills per game) six total blocks, two solo, and three service aces to help lead the Toreros to a 3-1 record this past weekend.

The Toreros will have a bye week ahead, then will return to action on Sept. 29 as they head to the Bay Area to open West Coast Conference play against the University of San Francisco in a 7 p.m. match.
