USF Volleyball Wins 14th Straight and Captures Long Island Invitational Title

Final Stats

(Brooklyn) - USF won the 2006 Long Island Blackbird Invitational after defeating defending Ivy League Champion Cornell 3-1 (25-30, 30-27, 30-23, 31-29) in the morning session and sweeping St. Francis (NY) 30-6, 30-14, 30-18 Saturday at the Wellness Center. The Dons (16-1) win their third straight tournament and have won 14 consecutive matches.

Junior outside hitter Brynn Maurer earned tournament MVP honors for the first time in her career and registered her fourth double-double of the season against Cornell with 13 kills and 22 digs. Sophomore setter Darcy Carroll earned all-tournament honors for the first time in her career, while sophomore middle blocker Alix Gombos earned all-tournament selection for the third time this season. Junior outside hitter also made the all-tournament squad after erupting for a tournament-high 25 kills against Cornell.

San Francisco now turns its focus towards the upcoming West Coast Conference campaign. The Dons open league action Thursday, September 28 at home against San Diego. First serve against the Toreros is set for 7:00 PM at War Memorial Gym.
