Sept. 25, 2007

FULLERTON, Calif. - After 10 days off from competition, Loyola Marymount volleyball returned to form quickly, sweeping Cal State Fullerton 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-28) in non-conference road action Tuesday. The win marked LMU's 12th straight win over the Titans, as the Lions have not dropped a match to the cross-town foe since the 1980s.

The Lions hit .305 as a team behind the setting of Renee Horton, who finished with 39 assists and eight digs.

The national kill leader Heather Hughes finished with her 10th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 11 digs on a .343 hitting percentage.

Senior Jania Motton added 10 kills and three blocks while hitting .526. Erin Downey tallied nine kills, hitting .727.

An early block by Erin Downey and Heather Hughes helped the Lions take a 6-1 lead in game one and forced a Titan timeout. But Cal State Fullerton bounced back within one at 12-11. The Lions regrouped and maintained the lead, cruising to a 30-21 victory.

Game two was close early, until the Lions built an 18-13 lead on a kill by Downey. Once again, Cal State Fullerton battled back within one before LMU pulled away for good. Hughes' service ace won game point for the Lions at 30-23.

Game three was the closest frame, including a tie as late as 24-24. But the Lions won the next four straight points to take a 28-24 lead. They held on for a 30-28 win to ensure the sweep.

The Lions out-blocked the Titans eight to four, thanks in part to four blocks by Emily Day. The defense held Cal State Fullerton to hit just .169 as a team.
