MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team opened the West Coast Conference portion of its schedule with a 3-0 setback at Saint Mary's College Thursday evening. The Gaels, who improved their record to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the WCC, swept the match by the scores of 33-31, 30-15, 30-25. With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 11-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference.
Gonzaga closed out the match with 44 total team kills, only four less than Saint Mary's, with senior Becky Jones leading the way with her ninth double-figure match of the season. Jones had 11 kills in the loss along with nine digs. Also strong offensively for the Zags was sophomore Michelle Boevers who tallied nine kills. Senior Briawna Mueller and junior Elaina Renius also had solid outings with eight kills apiece for Gonzaga.
Saint Mary's had two players finish in double-digit kills including one who finished with a double-double on the night. Megan York had a match-high 15 kills in the victory for the Gaels, in addition to 10 digs, while Taylor Groess chipped in 10 kills.
Gonzaga was able to hold a huge edge in digs, finishing the match with 56, while holding Saint Mary's to only 40. Senior Alecia Douglas led the way for the Bulldogs with 16. Senior Heather Dunn chipped in eight and freshman Allyson Powell and junior Frances Garcia added five each.
The key to SMC's victory though was their defensive play above the net. Saint Mary's closed out the match with an impressive 21-4 advantage in blocks. Five different players finished the match with five or more blocks for the Gaels. Shannon Lowell led all players with a double-figure performance of 10 block assists. Megan Burton added eight block assists and one solo block, while Lauren Jaeckel had six block assists. York and Groess each added five.
Gonzaga continues WCC action Saturday, Sept. 29 with a match against host Santa Clara University. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
