(San Diego) - USF opened the 2007 West Coast Conference schedule at No. 15 San Diego and fell 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-12) Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Dons (11-6, 0-1 WCC) scuffled offensively, while the defending league champion Toreros (11-4, 1-0 WCC) hit at a .299 clip for the match in winning their fourth straight.
Junior middle blocker Alix Gombos led the Dons offensively, recording a team-high nine kills on .643 hitting with no errors in 14 attempts to go along with a pair of blocks. Junior outside hitter Addie Webster chipped in eight kills, five digs and two blocks, while freshman opposite hitter Sarah Mandala and senior outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg recorded six kills apiece.
USF hit at a woeful .079 for the match with 33 kills and 25 attack errors. Four Dons hit negative.
Senior middle hitter Laurel Abramson led the way for the Toreros with 12 kills on .688 hitting with four blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Amy DeGroot added 10 kills, three aces and five digs. USD recorded 53 kills for the match and hit at a blistering 545 in game three with 19 kills and just one attack error.
San Francisco returns to action when it hosts ancient Bay Area WCC rivals Saint Mary's and Santa Clara to the Hilltop. USF welcomes the Gaels Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 PM and tackles the Broncos Saturday, October 6 at 1:00 PM. Both matches are at War Memorial Gym.
