SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team dropped its second-straight West Coast Conference match as the Bulldogs were outplayed by Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon. The Broncos, who improved their record to 10-7 overall and 2-0 in conference, swept the match in three games 30-22, 30-23, 30-25. With the loss, the Zags dropped to 11-6 overall and 0-2 in WCC action.
Gonzaga was held to 37 team kills with senior Becky Jones leading the Bulldogs with 10 kills. Senior Heather Dunn passed out 21 assists for GU as the Zags connected for only a .152 hitting percentage on the day.
Santa Clara's offense was quite different than Gonzaga's as the Broncos finished the match with 52 team kills and a .250 hitting clip. Brittany Lowe led SMC with a double-double of 19 kills, a match-high, and 11 digs. Lauryn Dowd and Lindsy Evans both chipped in nine kills for the Broncos. Evans also served up a match-high four aces in the victory.
The Broncos held the slight 48-45 edge in digs, while each squad closed out the match with six blocks. Senior Alecia Douglas finished the match with a team-high 19 digs for Gonzaga, while Caroline Walters collected a match-high 21 digs for Santa Clara.
Senior Briawna Mueller was the block leader during the match, finishing with five block assists. She also contributed eight kills and had three digs for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga returns home on Thursday, Oct. 4 to open its home portion of West Coast Conference action. The Bulldogs will host Pepperdine University at 7 p.m.
