Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's volleyball team came out with energy in the opening game and jumped on top of No. 25 San Diego early, but the Toreros won the next three games to win 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion.
The Gaels won the opening game 30-24, and dominated play for the entire game. But San Diego won the next three 30-24, 30-11, 30-26. With the loss the Gaels fall to 1-1 in West Coast Conference play and 6-7 overall. San Diego remains in first place in conference play with a 2-0 record and a 12-4 overall mark.
Offensively the Gaels were led by senior Christina Kirk, who recorded 15 kills with a .304 hitting percentage. Kirk also added seven digs and two aces. Senior Mandy Bible recorded a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs. Bible also added seven kills and four blocks.
Sophomore Brittany Barker recorded a season-high 12 kills and added four blocks. Taylor Groess added seven kills and Cassandra Kolkka had five kills and nine digs. Missie Stidham recorded 13 kills as libero.
As a team the Gaels hit .193 in the match, while San Diego hit .352. The Gaels recorded 10 blocks to the Toreros 13.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, October 7 when it hosts San Francisco at 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion.
