Despite Heather Hughes, Christianna Reneau and Emily Day's double-digit kill night, LMU (8-6, 0-1 WCC) fell to Pepperdine (9-4, 1-0 WCC) in the West Coast Conference opener Saturday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Lions came out strong winning game one, but the Waves bounced back taking the last three games and winning the match 3-1 (18-30, 30-23, 30-26, 30-25).
LMU came to play in game one taking an early lead. With the score 11-13, a kill by Heather Hughes started the Lions on a 6-0 run putting the game out of reach for the Waves. The Lions were up as many as 13 points en route to a 18-30 victory. With 15 kills and only four errors, LMU hit .344 as a team to Pepperdine's .036. Heather Hughes had six kills in the game.
The Waves bounced back in game two beating the Lions 30-23. With the scored tied 5-5 Pepperdine's Cassi Chamberlain had two back-to-back kills that put the Waves in the lead for the remainder of the game. In game three, LMU enjoyed a six point lead (10-16) before the Waves went on a 11-2 run, pulling away and taking the game 30-26. Game four was point for point with the Lions looking to hold on for a game five and the Waves looking to close the match. With the score tied 25-25 Pepperdine pulled ahead scoring the last five points of the game to claim the match.
Christianna Reneau scored a double double with 10 kills and 19 digs. Emily Day and Heather Hughes were also in double figures with 11 kills for Day, while Hughes had a team high 28 kills, hitting .377 for the match.
Pepperdine hit .263 in the match while the Lions hit .217.
Up next, the Lions travel to Portland on Thursday, October 4 to take on the Pilots.
