Malibu, Calif. - Sophomore Julie Rubenstein and freshman Rachel Lumsden recorded double-doubles Saturday afternoon against No. 12 Santa Clara but it was not enough as Pepperdine fell to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in West Coast Conference (WCC) play as the Broncos recorded the 30-26, 30-25, 30-25 sweep.
Lumsden (Brea, Calif.) hit a career-best .407 with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Rubenstein (Camarillo, Calif.) turned in a 10-kill, 11-dig effort for the Waves (2-2 WCC).
Anna Cmaylo recorded a match-leading 19 kills on .630 hitting. Kim McGiven chipped in with 13 kills and 11 digs for the Broncos who improved to 12-4 (2-2 WCC).
The match started as a tightly contested affair as the two teams battled to a 9-9 tie. A 3-0 run by Santa Clara gave them a lead they would maintain for the majority of the set. Trailing 25-22, Pepperdine locked the score at 25-all off a Lumsden kill and consecutive Bronco ball handling errors. But the Waves would only score once more in game one as Santa Clara took a 1-0 lead in the match.
A Kayla Walker (Kaysville, Utah) tied game two at 6-6 but the Broncos would score seven of the next eight points to take a 13-7 lead. The Waves would never get closer than three in falling into a 2-0 hole in the match.
Leading by two, 7-5, Santa Clara took control of the game one with a 5-0 run as four different Broncos recorded kills. Pepperdine battled the long fight back and following kills by Cassi Chamberlain (Lakewood, Calif.) and Rubenstein and a Santa Clara attack error, the Waves held their first lead of the game, 19-18. After trading points, Cmaylo carried the Broncos to a 4-0 run and a 23-20 lead. The lead would reach as many as six, 27-21 before completing the sweep.
Pepperdine will return to action Tuesday night when it travels to UC Santa Barbara for a 7 p.m. (PDT) non-conference match. The Waves will return to WCC play Thursday when they host San Francisco at 7 p.m.
