CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team closed out its non-conference slate with a 3-0 (30-24, 34-32, 30-24) sweep over Eastern Washington University Tuesday evening in Cheney. The victory for the Zags was the first win on the Eagles court since the 1994 season and only the fifth-ever sweep over EWU. The last time Gonzaga swept Eastern Washington was Oct. 19, 1994.
With the win Gonzaga improved its record to 13-7 overall, while Eastern Washington fell to 6-12 on the season. The 13 wins for the Bulldogs ties the most wins in a season since the 1996 campaign when GU closed out the year at 13-19.
Gonzaga was led by junior Elaina Renius and senior Briawna Mueller. Both players closed out the match with over a .400 hitting clip. Renius tallied a match-high 14 kills along with a match-high .478 attacking percentage, while Mueller added 13 kills and had a .455 hitting percentage. Also in double-figure kills was sophomore Michelle Boevers who had 10.
Senior Heather Dunn, who nearly collected a double-double after the first game with 12 assists and eight digs, finished the contest dishing out a match-high 35 assists as the Bulldogs had 52 kills and a .275 hitting percentage during the match. Dunn also added 11 digs for GU for her team-leading 10th double-double of the season.
Leading the way for Eastern Washington was Alysha Cook who had 12 kills, six block assists and three digs in the setback. The Eagles were held to only 44 total team kills and a .185 attacking clip.
Gonzaga will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 13 when it resumes West Coast Conference action with a match against the University of Portland at the Martin Centre. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
