Santa Clara, CA - Saint Mary's volleyball fell to the Santa Clara Broncos in three games, 26-30, 26-30, 21-30, on Friday night at the Leavey Center. The loss put the Gaels 10-7 on the year and 2-3 in conference play. Megan York led the Gaels with 15 kills and 10 digs, recording her 12 double-double of the year.
Saint Mary's could not find their rhythm in the first set, falling to the Broncos 26-30. Freshman Shannon Lowell posted five kills in the game, with no errors in eight attempts. Kapua Kamana'o and Christy Payne guided the Gaels at the setting position, leading Saint Mary's to a team hitting percentage of .350 in the loss. The Broncos were led by junior Brittany Lowe with eight kills. The Gaels recorded 18 kills and 10 digs to the Broncos 16 and 12, but were never able to take control of the game.
The Broncos came out with a commanding lead in the second game, taking a 20-12 lead over the Gaels. Saint Mary's would fight back to within one at 22-21, but the Broncos would respond with a Krista Kelly kill. Santa Clara would continue to challenge Saint Mary's at the net, eventually winning game two 30-26. The Gaels were led by York with six kills in the game, while Alita Fisher scooped up eight digs.
The Gaels were unable to stop the Broncos momentum in game three, as Santa Clara took a 15-5 lead over Saint Mary's. Payne would step up to the line and serve three straight points to push the score to 16-9; scoring off a Bronco error, SMC solo block, and Gael kill. Saint Mary's would turn-up their defensive play, recording two blocks and 13 digs. But the Broncos would continue to chip away at the Gaels, winning game three 30-21.
The Gaels return to McKeon Pavilion on October 18 at 7:00 PM versus Loyola Marymount. Saint Mary's will then face the Pepperdine Waves on Saturday October 20th, wrapping up the first round of WCC play.
