SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University senior Heather Dunn had her 11th double-double of the season, and fourth in a row, to help the women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-20, 32-30, 30-27) sweep of the University of Portland in a West Coast Conference match-up Saturday afternoon at the Martin Centre.
With the win the Bulldogs improved their record to 14-7 overall and 2-3 in conference, while the Pilots dropped to 7-12 overall and 0-5 in the WCC. The 14 wins are the most victories for the Zags since the 1994 campaign when GU closed out the season at 17-12.
Besides Dunn, who closed out the match with 45 assists and 12 digs, the Bulldogs had one other player finish the contest with a double-double. Senior Becky Jones collected her 10th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 12 digs.
Senior Briawna Mueller had a strong all-around performance for GU. The middle blocker had 10 kills in the victory and a match-high .421 hitting percentage, along with three digs, five block assists and two solo blocks. Mueller, who now has 479 total career blocks to her credit, hit the 100 career solo block mark with her two in the win today. Mueller also has 379 career block assists and is only 30 block assists away from breaking the Bulldog career record held by Lisa Petticord (408).
Leading the way for Portland was Maria Clemens with her match-tying high 13 kills. Jessica Clemens and Ashley Grayson added 10 and eight kills, respectively. J. Clemens also had 11 digs and four blocks in the setback, while Grayson added four digs and six blocks.
Gonzaga will be back in action Thursday, Oct. 18 when it plays at the University of San Francisco. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
