Moraga, CA - Gaels volleyball fell to the Loyola Marymount Lions in three games Thursday night, 18-30, 29-31, 29-31. Saint Mary's was led by freshman Megan York, tallying a match-high 20 kills while also adding nine digs. Shannon Lowell chipped in nine digs and four blocks for the Gaels. The Lions were led by Emily Day on the outside, recording 18 kills and 16 digs. Senior Heather Hughes of LMU recorded an impressive .342 hitting percentage, with 16 kills on 38 swings with only two errors.
In the first game Saint Mary's was unable to find a rhythm, exchanging points back and forth throughout the first eight points. The Lions pulled ahead to 14-9 and would not look back, extending their lead to 19-13. York posted four kills in the game, but it would not be enough as the Lions would win 30-18.
The slow starting Gaels began game two down 3-7, but fought back to tie the game at eight apiece on a York Kill. Saint Mary's would take the lead at 9-8, and would continue to battle back and forth with the Lions. The game included 10 ties and five lead changes. Once the score hit 20 both teams' intensity increased, recording 18 kills out of 24 total points. York recorded nine kills in the game, but the Lions would overpower the Gaels, winning 31-29. Loyola Marymount's Emily Day also recorded nine kills in the game, while Hughes added six.
Game three would start off in similar fashion as both teams would record score seven consecutive kills combined. York posted four of the seven kills to start game one, and would record three more in the game. The Gaels took a 24-20 lead, but the Lions would surge back to tie the game at 28-28. Junior Taylor Groess posted an important kill to give the Gaels a 29-28 lead, but LMU would answer back with three straight points to take the game, 31-29.
