SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Junior Becky Jones finished with 12 kills but it was not enough offensive punch as the University of San Francisco defeated Gonzaga University 3-0 in a West Coast Conference match Thursday evening in San Francisco. USF defeated the visiting Bulldogs 30-27, 30-18, 30-24 to improve to 18-5 overall and 2-4 in the WCC. Gonzaga dropped to 5-16 overall, 0-6 in conference.
Besides Jones, who added eight digs and three block assists, the Bulldogs were led by junior Briawna Mueller and sophomore Elaina Renius who both added six kills, five block assists and one solo block. Junior Heather Dunn passed out only 30 assists as Gonzaga was limited to 34 team kills and a .120 attack percentage in the three-game defeat.
San Francisco was led by Kristen Hassleberg and Alix Gombos. Hassleberg finished with a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs, while Gombos chipped in 11 kills and three blocks. Darcy Carroll and Jamie Kartchner combined for 48 assists as the Dons finished with 54 team kills and a .244 hitting clip.
San Francisco held the 61-41 edge in digs, while Gonzaga held the 14-5.5 advantage in blocks. USF's Haley Carroll led all players with 21 digs. Alecia Douglas was the Bulldog leader in digs with 13.
Gonzaga will be back in action this Saturday when it plays at Saint Mary's. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
