San Diego Sweeps Away No. 15 Santa Clara

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - For the seventh consecutive match, the big three help lead the 20th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to victory as Kristen Carlson, Laurel Abrahamson and Christie Dawson all record double-digit kills in a 3-0 West Coast Conference win over No. 15 Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the 30-25, 30-28, 30-27 win, the Toreros move to 17-4 overall, 7-0 in the WCC and have now reeled off seven consecutive victories. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 14-5 overall and 4-3 in the WCC.

Carlson led all players with 16 kills to go along with a match-best 13 digs to record her team-leading 14th double-double of the season. Dawson recorded 12 kills on 24 attempts for a .250 attacking percentage and Abrahamson recorded 10 kills on 21 attempts while only committing two attacking errors to post a .381 attacking percentage. Erin Wiskar also had a solid game for the Toreros recording nine kills on 19 attempts for a .421 clip. Jessica Nyrop recorded 40 assists to help lead the San Diego offense to a .303 team hitting percentage.

For the Broncos, Anna Cmaylo led the team in kills with 11 on 19 attempts to post a .316 attacking percentage. Lindsay Evans recorded 35 assists to help direct the SCU offense to a .207 team attacking percentage.

In game one, after the two teams were locked at 3-3, the Broncos took the early momentum with a 5-0 run. However, the Toreros clamped down and went to work as they used a 9-4 run to once again get on even playing terms with the Broncos. The two teams then seesawed back and fourth and with the score at 19-18 in favor of USD, the Toreros would go on a 6-2 run sparked by a Wiskar kill to take control of the game and cruise their way to a 30-25 win.

In game two, the Broncos were the ones who took control midway through the game as they quietly took a four point lead at 15-11. Nyrop then sparked a 6-2 run as she dumped the ball over the net much to the surprise of the Broncos. Then with the score knotted at 17-17 the teams battled back and fourth with nether team taking a lead bigger then two until Dawosn broke a 23-23 tie with a kill to give USD a lead they would not look back on.

In the final game, the Toreros took all the early momentum as they jumped out to a 9-3 lead. However, the Broncos didn't fade away as they got back into the game with a 5-2 run pulling within two at 11-9 and would eventually go on to tie the game at 13-13 on a Brittany Lowe kill. It was then again a seesaw battle with each team taking a lead, until USD took over for good at 19-18 thanks to an attacking error by SCU's Megan Pura.

The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they begin the second half of WCC play by hosting Saint Mary's College in a 7 p.m. match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
