SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophia Milo led all players with 17 kills and a .571 attack percentage as Pepperdine University defeated Gonzaga University in three games during a West Coast Conference match-up at the Martin Centre Saturday afternoon. The Waves, who improved to 10-10 on the year and 6-3 in the WCC, combined for 57 kills during the 30-23, 30-21, 30-24 victory. With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 7-17 on the year and 2-7 in conference.
The Bulldogs, who were coming off their first back-to-back WCC wins since the 2002 season, struggled to find any offense as they finished with 34 kills and a .141 hitting clip. Junior Becky Jones was the top GU hitter with 12 kills and five digs. Jones also added two block assists and one service ace.
Sophomore Elaina Renius chipped in seven kills, while junior Briawana Mueller and freshman Emily Johnson each tallied four kills in the loss. Setter Heather Dunn finished with 30 assists, a team-high 10 digs, two kills and one service ace for the Bulldogs.
Milo and the Waves were on fire all day as the team combined for a .306 hitting percentage. Julie Rubenstein and Rachel Lumsden also reached double figure kills with 17 and 11, respectively. Pepperdine was led defensively by Kekai Crabbe who collected a match-high 13 digs
Gonzaga will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 4 when it welcomes the University of Portland to the Martin Centre for a West Coast Conference match. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
