SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team put a scare into the 18th ranked Toreros of the University of San Diego Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, Calif. The Bulldogs earned a thrilling 32-30 victory in game one but could not sustain their momentum dropping the next three games to fall to USD 3-1 (30-32, 30-22, 30-27, 30-23). With the loss Gonzaga dropped its overall record to 8-18 overall and 3-8 in the West Coast Conference, while San Diego improved it's WCC league-leading record to 21-5 overall and 11-1 in conference.
Gonzaga had three players finish in double-digit kills, including junior outside hitter Becky Jones who collected her 13th double-double of the season. Jones finished with 13 kills and a match-high 15 digs in the loss.
Also finishing in double-figure kills was junior Briawna Mueller and freshman Emily Johnson. Mueller tallied a team-high 14 kills and added seven block assists and one solo block, while Johnson collected 11 kills, two digs and two block assists.
Junior setter Heather Dunn dished out 48 assists as the Bulldogs finished with 58 total team kills and a .233 hitting clip. Dunn was also strong defensively for Gonzaga, picking up 11 digs, three block assists and one solo block.
San Diego was led offensively by Christie Dawson who closed out the match with a match-high 22 kills and an impressive .606 attacking percentage. Dawson also added two digs, two block assists and one solo block.
Kristen Carslon added 10 kills and 11 digs for the Toreros, while Laurel Abrahamson and Laura Murphy chipped in 16 and 12 kills, respectively.
Jessica Nyrop dished out 65 assists as San Diego finished the match with 81 kills and a .239 hitting percentage.
The Zags will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 11 when they play at Santa Clara University. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
