SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Gonzaga University women's volleyball junior Briawna Mueller and freshman Emily Johnson each had 11 kills but it was not enough as the 22nd ranked Santa Clara University Broncos defeated the visiting Bulldogs in three-straight games (30-27, 30-28, 30-27). With the loss, Gonzaga fell to 8-19 overall and 3-9 in the West Coast Conference. With the win, the Broncos improved to 20-6 overall and 9-4 in conference.
Mueller was solid all around for Gonzaga. Along with her 11 kills and match-high .688 hitting percentage, she added four block assists and one dig. Johnson, who has finished in double-figure kills in three-straight contests, also chipped in three blocks assists and three digs.
Junior Becky Jones finished one-kill shy of her 14th double-double of the season; closing out the match with nine kills and 12 digs. Classmate Heather Dunn passed out 40 assists as the Bulldogs tallied 48 total team kills and had a .254 attack percentage. Dunn also had five kills, 10 digs, one service ace and one block assist during the match.
Besides Jones and Dunn, junior Alecia Douglas also finished the match with double digit digs. Douglas collected 12 digs, along with serving up two service aces.
The Broncos had three players close out the match with double-figure kills. Anna Cmaylo had a match-high 16 kills, while Brittany Lowe and Kim McGiven both finished with 11 kills a piece. Setter Crystal Matich dished out 45 assists as Santa Clara finished with 56 total team kills and a .288 hitting percentage.
Defensively SCU was led by Caroline Walters with her match-high 15 digs.
Gonzaga will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 16 when it welcomes Saint Mary's College to the Martin Centre. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
