Women's Volleyball Swept by Waves

Malibu, CA - Saint Mary's volleyball was unable to find their rhythm in Malibu, CA as they were defeated by the Pepperdine Waves in three games, 30-26, 30-27, 30-25. The Gaels were led by Megan York with 14 kills and five blocks, while Pepperdine's Lecca Roberts picked up 14 kills in the match.

Saint Mary's gave up the lead early in game one, but surged back behind the serving of Kelly Huston. Huston served four straight points, as the Gaels took a 14-10 lead over the Waves. Kristen Seaton would end the Saint Mary's run for Pepperdine, but a Wave service error would put the ball back in the Gael's hands.

Sophomore Alita Fisher picked up an ace to give the Gaels an 18-13 lead, but the Waves would answer back, forcing the Gaels into three consecutive errors. Saint Mary's would then fight through a long rally to give them a 21-20 edge over Pepperdine. The tides would turn for the Gaels as the Waves would string together multiple points, taking a late 26-22 lead over Saint Mary's. The Gaels would not regain the lead in the game, as they would lose 30-26.

Saint Mary's would respond at the start of game two, as they battled point for point with the Waves, taking an 18-16 lead over Pepperdine. The Waves would call a timeout to slow things down, but junior Taylor Groess would hammer a ball down the line to take 19-17 advantage over the Waves. Once the score hit 20 Pepperdine found their rhythm, taking back the lead and the game. Saint Mary's was defeated 30-27 in game two.

At the break the Gaels were led by junior Taylor Groess with eight kills and two blocks. Lecca Roberts paced the Waves with nine kills, while posting a .333 hitting percentage. After two sets Saint Mary's led the match in blocks, recording eight to the Waves five.

Pepperdine continued to play consistently throughout the third game, taking a 17-13 lead over the Gaels. Nikki Gonzales recorded her first ace of the night to bring the Gaels within two, 16-18, but Saint Mary's was unable to gain back the momentum as they were defeated 30-25 in game three.

The Gaels finish the 2007 regular season next weekend, as they participate in the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, CA. Saint Mary's will first face the Cincinnati Bearcats on November 23 at 5:00 PM. On November 24 the Gaels will face the winner of Pacific and Fresno State at a time to be determined.
