SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-26, 30-26, 24-30, 30-21) decision to Saint Mary's College in a West Coast Conference match-up this evening at the Martin Centre. Junior Becky Jones led the Bulldogs with her 14th double-double of the season. With the loss, Gonzaga drops to 8-20 overall and 3-10 in the WCC, while Saint Mary's improved to 11-3 overall and 6-7 in conference with the win.
Besides Jones, who finished with 11 kills and a team-high 18 digs, the Bulldogs had three other players finish in double-figure kills. Freshman Layne Brosky chipped in 14 kills, while senior Briawna Mueller and sophomore Elaina Renius both added 10 a piece. Mueller also had a match-high five solo blocks, along with three block assists and Renius had four block assists and two digs.
Junior setter Heather Dunn passed out 50 assists as Gonzaga tallied 60 total team kills and a .206 hitting clip. Dunn also finished with six kills, eight digs, one service ace, one block and one block assist.
Saint Mary's had four players finish in double-figure kills, including one player who tallied a double-double. Cassandra Kolkka collected a double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs, while Missie Stidham led all players with 18 kills. Rounding out the Gaels offensive threats were Christina Kirk and Taylor Groess who chipped in 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
SMC setter Mandy Bible dished out 58 assists as the Gaels had 69 total team kills and a .224 attacking percentage. Bible also had 10 digs and nine block assists during the match.
Gonzaga will close-out West Coast Conference action this Saturday when it welcomes the University of San Francisco to the Martin Centre. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
