Nov. 21, 2006

LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount (18-12) volleyball topped Cal State Northridge (16-12) 3-1 (30-18, 30-26, 24-30, 30-22) in non-conference action Tuesday night in Gersten Pavilion. The match was part of a doubleheader with LMU women's basketball that saw both Lion teams pick up wins over their Big West opponents.

The Lions got a boost from sophomore Emily Day, who put up 23 kills, hitting at a season-best .488 clip. Combined with her 15 digs, Day had one of the Lions' four statistical double-doubles.

Ashley Dutro (54 assists, 12 digs), Christianna Reneau (10 kills, 13 digs), and Heather Hughes (12 kills, 15 digs) had the other big numbers for the Lions.

Seniors Sandy Krone and Cat Svorinich combined for 29 digs for the Lions.

The Lions held Cal State Northridge to just a .133 team hitting percentage Tuesday night.

LMU was most commanding in game one, breaking a 4-4 tie behind the serving of Hughes for three straight points. The Lions never trailed again in the frame, pulling away by as many as 14 before winning 30-18. Day tallied seven kills, hitting .700, in game one.

The Lions cooled off slightly in game two, but fought off a surging Matador squad at the end of the frame with some tough defense for the 30-26 win.

An early six-point run in game three gave Cal State Northridge the lead for the rest of the frame. LMU pulled within two again at 17-15, but the Matadors rallied off a convincing eight straight points to push the contest to four games with a 30-24 win in game three.

The Lions hit their best in game four, using a .354 team hitting percentage to help seal the 3-1 victory with a 30-22 victory.

Darla Donaldson led the Matadors with 13 kills and five blocks. Setter Angela Hupp had a match-high 20 digs.

Earlier in the day, the West Coast Conference announced its annual selections, with Hughes earning first-team honors and Reneau receiving honorable mention recognition.

The Lions will host the final match of the regular season this Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. against the Dayton Flyers. The Flyers will first take on Pepperdine in Malibu Wednesday night. Once again, Saturday's match will follow LMU women's basketball, as basketball will have the final two games of their Thanksgiving tournament at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion.
